He went on to become an important archaeologist and the lead excavator of the tomb of King Tutankhamun. He found the Egyptian pharaoh’s sarcophagus in February 1923 after years of searching and more than three months of excavation.
The discovery of King Tut’s tomb made a huge impact as one of the most well-preserved tombs of its kind, and Carter became an in-demand speaker throughout the United States. The British archaeologist died in 1939 at age 66.
